Yes, the Mariners have already signed Josh Naylor, and — much more notably — the Orioles have already signed Leody Taveras, but you might call today the day when free agency begins in earnest.
The deadline for players to accept or reject the qualifying offer, set this year at $22.025 million, is today at 4 p.m. ET. After that, the free agent field will be set. This year 13 free agents received the offer, and most are expected to reject it. I'll be watching to see what decision OF Trent Grisham and starting pitchers Brandon Woodruff and Shota Imanaga make.
